We recently spent a month traveling through Greece, and we completely fell in love with the country! That’s why we’ve decided to write this blog post.

The history, the food, the people – everything is just a little bit better in Greece. Even the not-so-good experiences we had in Greece, were really not that bad. So we’re clearly super biased when it comes to writing this article. Or maybe we’re just exactly the right people for it…?

Either way, we’re ready to give you all the best reasons to why you should book your next trip to beautiful Greece. So hopefully, you’ll make up your mind over the next 5 minutes and go book those tickets!

Here are our top 10 reasons to why you should visit Greece on your next trip in 2024.

Why you should visit Greece

Without further ado, let’s dive right into it.

1. Food

First of all – the food! Greek food is one of the most obvious reasons why someone should visit Greece. If you’re a big foodie, then you won’t be disappointed.

Greece has a mixture of so many different dishes! The country is surrounded by all the good things you can find in the sea, beautiful and ripe olive trees, delicious feta cheese, yoghurt, lamb, eggplant, tomatoes, pomegranate – and we could keep on going! The Greek cuisine has so many good products to offer.

Here are our favorite dishes from the Greek cuisine:

• Freshly grilled vegetables
• Fava, Tzatziki, and Taramasalata
• All the olives – always say yes to the olives!
• Gigantes – big beans in tomato sauce
• Grilled feta cheese with sweet honey
• Greek sausage (Loukaniko)
• Cretan and Greek Salad
• Everything from the sea!
• Greek lamb chops
• Stuffed eggplants
• Greek beef stew
• zucchini balls
• Moussaka
• Baklava
• Gyros

But apart from the fresh produce and the great dishes that comes with it, the eating style in Greece is also unique. It’s very common to go to a “meze” restaurant where you can order several small dishes and share it with friends and family.

So you can easily spend hours having a good time in the restaurants of Greece!

The only downside to all this great food is that it’s sometimes bathed in fresh garlic. During our trip, Glenn and I frequently woke up in the middle of the night with a dry garlic mouth – anxiously looking for any form of liquid. But it was so worth it!

2. People

Another reason why you should visit Greece is because of the locals.

The Greek people are known as some of the most friendly and hospitable people in Europe – maybe even the world. Booking.com even deemed Greece one of the most welcoming places on Earth in 2018 based on guest reviews.

Apparently the Greek hospitality has a long history.

In ancient Greece, there was a concept called, “Philoxenia“, which translates into “friendship with a guest”. It’s a custom that states you should be friendly to strangers and show them generosity. This concept is still present in Greece today, and it’s why we’re devoting a section of this post to the lovely people of Greece.

Apart from being generous and friendly, Greek people can also be good fun! So make sure to take your time and get to know the friendly Greek locals while you’re visiting their beautiful country.

3. Islands

The Greek islands are one of the top reasons why you should visit Greece. And it’s why many go here on holiday in the first place. We’d say that it’s probably the most exotic islands you’ll find in Europe with their white sandy beaches and turquoise water.

The Greek islands are also popular because it’s easy to go island-hopping in the country. We did it ourselves and used Ferryhopper.com when booking tickets – it was easy and they’re reliable.

• Santorini – probably the most famous island in all of Greece.
• Crete – the biggest island in all of Greece, full of things to do.
• Skopelos – One of the greenest islands in Greece, we loved it here.
• Kos – Full of historical sites and a real holiday island.
• Corfu – It just looks so damn beautiful on pictures.

4. Sunsets

Greece has some incredibly beautiful sunsets. A top reason why you should visit Greece in our opinion.

We undoubtedly watched some of the best sunsets of our lives here – On a rock overlooking the landscape in Meteora, at Arios Pagos just beneath Acropolis yet above the city of Athens, on Kos island from the beach, on a a rooftop bar in Athens. Sooo many good sunsets!

So make sure to take moment to enjoy one of Greece’s many beautiful sunsets.

5. Mountains

It’s not what first comes to mind when you think of Greece, but another great reason to visit are the mountains. Did you know that Greece is one of the most mountainous countries in all of Europe?

So if you’re a keen hiker, climber or mountaineer, then the mountains definitely play a role in why you should visit Greece.

The most famous mountain in Greece is undoubtedly Mount Olympus, which in the Ancient Greek Mythology was home to the gods. It’s located on the mainland, but you also have several mountains on the Greek islands. Check out Mount Ainos in Kefalonia, Mount Ida in Crete or Dikeos Mountain in Kos.

6. History

One of the most fascinating things about Greece is the history.

The Ancient Greek history is one of the best reasons to visit Greece. Whether you’re a historian or not, you’ll most likely be interested in learning about the ancient times.

For example, it’s in Ancient Greece that philosophy has its roots, where democracy was born, where theatre came to life, and it’s home to both the ancient and the modern Olympic Games. There is just so much interesting history to learn in Greece.

Greece was such a big and important civilization a couple of thousands years ago, which is seen in all the magnificent ruins such as Acropolis.

But whether you’re in Athens, experiencing some of the world’s most magnificent ancient ruins, or in the Greek islands, checking out smaller, local ancient ruins, it will most likely be a memory that’s stuck with you long after your Greece trip is over!

7. Weather

Greece has a mediterranean climate, which means that the Summer months are often very dry and hot, whereas the Winter months are cold and wet. However, it often won’t go below minus degrees unless you find yourself in the North of the country.

Many islands have little to no tourism over the Winter months, which means your safest bet to visit Greece in this period is to either explore Athens, Thessaloniki, or the most popular islands such as Crete or Santorini.

But the weather in Greece is still much better all year round than in many other countries. Plus, even though it may be cold and rainy sometimes, the sun often makes it appearance. Did you know that Greece is one of the most sunniest countries in the world?

So if you’re a Northener like us, then the weather is one of the top reasons why you should visit Greece. Just getting that D-vitamin on a regular basis is something we would love!

8. It’s affordable

Another reason why Greece is good to visit is because it’s affordable.

If you eat in local restaurants and stay in guesthouses, then your money will last long. Even the attractions aren’t that expensive to visit compared to other European countries.

Our average daily spendings were €88 for everything including food, attractions, hotels, and transportation. And we’re a couple! This means you can easily spent less than €50 a day if you’re traveling solo – you just have to budget a bit and think about where you put your money.

For example, you won’t be able to visit Santorini on this budget, but you can easily enjoy Athens.

Our biggest expense while traveling in Greece was the transportation. So make sure to book your ferries and flights ahead of time to save a bit of money, so you won’t be surprised with the crazy prices.

All in all, Greece is great for your wallet! And whether you’re traveling on a budget or not, your money will most likely go far in this country.

9. Cats

All right. This may be a bit of a weird one…

But if you love cats, then you should definitely visit Greece on your next adventure in Europe. Seriously! This country is full of them.

It didn’t matter which city or island we visited, we were always sure to have a cuddle-buddy 5 meters away. And we’re even dog people! But after a certain amount of time, you start to adapt to your surroundings, and Greece is a cat country. So during our time here, we become cat people.

This particular reason to visit Greece may not have been able to stand alone, but it’s surely one of the things that makes your trip a little bit better. Who can reject a furry friend looking for cuddles? Not me.

10. UNESCO sites

One of the absolute top reasons to visit Greece are the UNESCO Sites.

Greece has some very interesting UNESCO sites – some of which are really unique! The Meteora Monasteries is one of the most incredible places we’ve ever been on earth, and we can 100% recommend you to go visit!

Then you of course have the amazing Acropolis in Athens, the Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, and the many archaeological sites scattered all over the country.

So make sure to read about all the amazing UNESCO Sites of Greece and book a trip to one of them!
