Sunset in Meteora_blog post header

I will never forget the sunset in Meteora.

Meteora is this incredible place in Greece. Here you can find some beautiful landscapes while visiting several historical monasteries that are located on top of rock pillars. It’s rare to find such a unique scenery like this.

So watching the sun go down over Meteora was an extraordinary experience. In fact, it was one of the best sunsets I’ve watched in my entire life.

But why the sudden urge to write about it? My current present (sitting and writing in a library in cold Copenhagen while light snow is falling outside) makes me want to dream away and share this fantastic memory. Plus, I want to give some practical information to anybody out there, who also want to watch the fantastic sunset in Meteora.

So in this blog post, I’ll share all the information you need to know about the sunset in Meteora, and I’ll of course share some of Glenn’s pictures and my own comments about the experience. Now let’s begin!

How to watch the sunset in Meteora step by step

1. Check the weather

Before you set your heart on watching the sunset in Meteora, you should check the weather. Make sure that there is actually a sunset to watch or else it would be a waste of time or a waste of money if you buy a sunset tour.

So check the weather for Kalambaka or Meteora before you go. If the sky is grey and it’s raining, then I would wait for a better day to do it.

2. What time is the sunset

Check the time of the sunset. You don’t want to be too late for it.

The sunset in Meteora is very popular to watch, so make sure to get there early enough to find a good spot to watch it from. We were there almost an hour before the sunset, and we got a great place to sit.

3. Best sunset spots in Meteora

The way I see it, there are 3 good spots to watch the sunset in Meteora.

The two most popular places are the two massive rock boulders on the big road in Meteora. One of these are also what is called the “Sunset Rock” – however, we never learned which one it was. We watched the sunset from the second rock coming from the left.

These massive boulders give you some incredible views over Meteora. However, they get really popular during sunset. So expect it to be crowded, which is why you should arrive early.

If you’re afraid of heights (like me), then it can also be a bit eerie to sit here and watch the sunset. But I managed. Just make sure to WATCH YOUR STEP, and don’t go close to the edge just to get the perfect picture for instagram. It’s just not worth the risk of falling down.

If you’re feeling uncomfortable with the height and the many people at the sunset rocks, then I would go to the third spot in Meteora where you can watch a beautiful sunset from. The third spot is the road right next to The Holy Trinity Monastery. From here you can also see a beautiful sunset, but you have the safety of not standing on a big rock – instead you stand on a concrete road.

4. How to get there: Alone or with a tour

You can either go by yourself or you can join a sunset tour.

We went by ourselves. We drove our rental scooter to one of the sunset spots and watched it from here. However, you can also hike to the top or you can drive your car. Just notice that a lot of vehicles are parked along the road, so the smaller your vehicle is, the easier it will be to find a parking spot.

There is also a daily sunset tour in Meteora, which picks you up at your hotel in Kalambaka or Kastraki, and then a local guide takes you to some places in the area including one of the monasteries. When it’s time, you will then be taken to watch the sunset. We never tried the tour, but it’s a good option for those who cannot go by themselves.

My story watching the sunset in Meteora

We left Kalambaka early on the day we were going to watch the sunset. We hadn’t decided from where we would watch the sunset, but we were determined to get a great spot!

So about an hour before the sunset, we jumped on the scooter and headed up the road to Meteora. We drove around, scouting for the best spot, and settled for the second big rock on the road.

I remember walking onto the rock and telling Glenn how I wasn’t sure about this. I mean, it’s a pretty big drop if I stumble and fall. And we both knew it’s not unlikely with my clumsy movements. However, Glenn calmed me down, and we slowly headed out onto the rock to find a good spot.

There were already some people sitting there waiting. We were definitely not the only ones with the idea to watch the sunset in Meteora.

But it didn’t matter. We were just feeling blessed to be there.

So we started to watch the sun go down.

There is just something about watching the colours change in the sky. It was so magical that I almost forgot that we were surrounded by a trillion other people who was also sitting there. But nobody was yelling or talking loudly. Everyone was just enjoying the changing colours of the sky.

I remember looking away from the view in front of me and seeing this incredible purple and orange sky behind me. Glenn and I were just surrounded by beauty.

I’m not gonna lie, the many other people definitely took away some of the magic compared to if we’d been alone. But watching the sunset in Meteora was just the perfect ending to our time in this incredible place in Greece, and to this day it’s still one of the best sunsets I’ve ever watched.

I cannot wait to go back.
