Since July 2019, we have been uploading vlogs about our travels, and we now (January 2020) finally hit the milestone of 500 subscribers on YouTube!
For a small YouTube channel, that is surely something to celebrate! Therefore, I’ve decided to write this blog post where I will share the statistics behind our 500 subscribers on YouTube.
Before we begin, I’d like to remind everyone that subscriber numbers are very subjective to each YouTube channel. We could probably have hit this milestone way earlier if we had uploaded more vlogs.
Who knows? This is just how our YouTube channel played out. So let’s get to it! This is our journey to 500 subscribers on YouTube.
About our YouTube channel
Our YouTube channel Worldwide Walkers was a project we started when we left on our round-the-world-trip in July 2019.
Basically, we started filming every step along the way. So far you can find travel vlogs from countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore.
We also have a few food challenges and short films, but we mainly upload travel vlogs. Go watch our channel trailer to get an idea about who we are and what we do.
Why is 500 YouTube subscribers something to celebrate?
Most YouTubers aim for the golden 1000 subscribers because this means that their channel can get monetized, and you can actually get a bit of money out of all the hours you put into making videos.
At 500 subscribers, you are halfway there and you start to build a small community. Therefore, 500 subscribers is surely something to celebrate!
The numbers behind our 500 subscribers on YouTube
Now, let’s get started on all the numbers! This is our road to 500 subscribers on YouTube.
How long does it take to get 500 subscribers on YouTube?
Between 9/7/2019 – 24/1/2020 we made 500 subscribers on our YouTube channel, which means it took us around 6,5 months to reach this milestone. within this time frame we uploaded 28 travel vlogs on YouTube.
I think it’s safe to say that it really does take time to build a community – unless you get lucky and one of your videos go viral.
How many views do you need to get 500 subscribers?
While it only took us 6.800 views to get 100 subscribers on YouTube, the story behind our 500 subscribers is completely different. Within these 6,5 months we managed to get 81.465 views on our YouTube channel.
So, we had over 80.000 views when we reached the 500 subs milestone, which means it was much easier for us to get to 100 subscribers than 500 subscribers.
How long watch time do you need to get 500 subscribers?
At this point, we had 4907,3 watch hours from our videos.
In order to get monetized on YouTube, you need 4000 watch hours within a year and 1000 subscribers. This meant that we already surpassed the first threshold to getting monetized, but we are only halfway when it comes to the subscriber count.
Graph over our first 500 subscribers on YouTube
As you can see on the graph, we gained way more subscribers in the last 1/3 of the period, starting from November.
This is when we began uploading our travel vlogs from Japan. Apparently, Japanese people watch a lot of YouTube. Compared to many of our other vlogs, all our Japan vlogs have more than a thousand views.
Our best viewed vlog eventually made more than 90.000+ views (2021 stats). Although we don’t think this is our best vlog, we are still proud to have made so many views in just one video.
We do not claim to be experts in any way, we are just showing you how long it took for us to make 500 subscribers on YouTube with our travel vlogs. Remember that it’s very different from channel to channel.
However, if you are curious in what we do to gain subscribers, then please read this blog post about our first 100 subscribers on YouTube. I think my best advice (what works well on our channel) is to put end screens on all videos.
What’s our next goal on YouTube?
1000 subscribers of course!
But … It’s not just about getting monetized, we also want more people to follow along and watch our travel vlogs. It’s really motivating when some of our videos get good views and watch time.
We put many hours, days and nights into our travel vlogs, so we want people to watch them. To all of you who already follow along – thank you so much!!! We really appreciate it. There is nothing better than getting a nice comment from one of you.
To all of you who aren’t subscribed to our channel, please support us by hitting that red subscribe button!

Wow! What a milestone! I want to do something similar but Iām scared. I need to just do it!!
Hi Chelsea, I know it’s scary to put yourself out on video. Somehow I feel like it’s more personal and I feel more “naked” than when I’m blogging. I’m sure you would do great! š Thanks!
